The past year, I’ve been feeling a bit adrift from my magickal practice. This has been a time of pulling inwards and doing some inner work, a time of cocooning and remaking. I am beginning to feel the pull outwards though, and it is time to anchor back into my life.
My home and my family are my biggest anchor and this time is about connecting back into my home, and hearthcraft is a pathway into my magick. For me, the very foundation of hearthcraft is the magick that causes a house to transcend and become a home.
A house is a very generic thing and it lacks the soul that comes to mind when I think about the word home. And the term hearth takes that a step further. It harkens back to the days when the fire in the kitchen was the very center of the home. Food, shelter, and somewhere safe to sleep are really the most basic, primal needs that we have. And this is where the Hearth Witch sets up their domain.
A Hearth Witch is about more than great cooking, although make no mistake, most of us could happily spend hours discussing recipes and serving up meals for friends and family. It’s about the way that a dinner made special for your family or making time for a cup of tea and a chat says, “I care about you.” There’s a nurture element in the practice of hearthcraft that wants to feed and care for the soul.
My home is an altar, the hearth (kitchen) is its beating heart. It’s the anchor, the womb, and the most magickal room in any house. Look around and notice the roaring fire, the cauldron, and the fragrant herbs bubbling within. And it is in this place that I find myself, the place that my life begins to knit itself into back into being.
For me, Hearth Witchcraft is a daily, living mindfulness practice to transform the mundane into the magical, it’s taking all those simple joys of life and turning them into something beautiful.
